I think I am a young carer, what should I do?
The first thing to do is not to panic or to worry too much. There is lots of support available in East Renfrewshire to help and support young carers.
There are lots of reasons why young people who have a caring role might not want to ask for help;
- We know you won’t want your friends or class mates to treat you differently.
- You might be worried about what teachers or social workers will do.
- You might not want to talk about the person in your family who is ill or disabled, you might think you are letting them down.
- It is hard to talk about mental health problems.
- You might be worried about alcohol problems or drug misuse.
Don’t let any reason stop you for asking for help.
We will talk to you in confidence and make sure that you and the person you care for or worry about gets the right support.
If you want to talk to someone about being a young carer we encourage you to speak to a teacher or contact our young carers team, Kevin or Abbie on 0141 638 4888 or through email:

The Young Carers’ team have been very busy with a jam-packed summer, giving young carers an essential break from their caring role, and most importantly, to have fun!
Some of the exciting activities they took part in were; day trips to Millport and Blackpool, the Edinburgh Dungeons, Escape Rooms, Lazer Quest, and the Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf! They also visited Briarlands Farm, where they got to meet lots of furry animals.
One of the highlights was the Scottish Young Carers Festival at Fordell Firs. There were almost 400 young carers that attended, with a packed programme that included live magic, bands, inflatables, arts and crafts and a new wellbeing space with yoga and therapy! The Festival also gave young carers their own platform to share their views and experiences.
