Who is an Adult Carer?

Support for anyone who looks after a family member, friend or neighbour.

An adult carer is anyone aged 18 or over who looks after, or helps to look after, a partner, family member, friend or neighbour who couldn’t manage without their support. 

You don’t have to live with the person, and caring doesn’t have to be full-time – you’re still a carer. This might be because of:

Illness or disability
Mental ill health
Alcohol / drug misuse
Dementia
Frailty or a long-term condition
What do Adult Carers do?

An adult carer may help with any of the following:

Personal care
Giving medication
Cooking, shopping and housework
Managing money and bills
Arranging and attending appointments
Emotional support and companionship

How can East Renfrewshire Carers Center help?

We can help you to cope with your caring role by:

  • Giving information and advice
  • Offering 1:1 support from a carer support worker who understands your situation
  • Helping you to complete your Adult Carer Support Plan
  • Helping you access benefits, grants and short breaks (respite)
  • Providing opportunities to take a break and meet other carers
  • Supporting your own health and wellbeing
